Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
