Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
