Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
