'Candy game'
The legal representative, prosecuting, outlined the defendant's actions to the court.
She said his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a summer program which he operated.
Ruben conducted a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel stated, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and ask them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".
She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "for many years", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.
She stated Ruben had been able to explain this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had concerns in recently.
The legal representative stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had worries about the situation, with valid cause.
"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."
Mrs Prior KC stated items including lubricant, petroleum jelly and medical needles were located, and his stepchild contacted the authorities about his worries.
She stated the man proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six youngsters that night - July 26th - and they were all sick the following morning.
"Law enforcement" had not responded by that stage," she stated further.
The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.
The prosecutor explained the minors were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson called the authorities a second time.
